Welcome to Valencia!

Thinking of what to do in Valencia? If you only have one day to explore this vibrant city, I have the perfect itinerary that will guide you through both the iconic and hidden spots of Valencia. Get ready to immerse yourself in the history, culture, and gastronomy of this beautiful city. Let’s get started!

1. Grand Entrance: Torres de Serranos

We begin our adventure by entering the heart of Valencia through the impressive Torres de Serranos. These towers, which once formed part of the city's medieval wall, are the perfect welcome. From the top, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city that will leave you in awe.

Secret tip: Admission is 4 euros, but it’s free on Sundays.

2. Exploring the Barrio del Carmen

One of my favorite places in Valencia is the Barrio del Carmen, the historical soul of Valencia. Its narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with pastel-colored houses that contrast with the street art adorning the walls. Walking through here, every corner holds a secret, like the majestic Church of San Nicolás, known as Valencia’s Sistine Chapel. The frescoes inside are a masterpiece you cannot miss.

3. A Walk Through the Past: El Portal de la Valldigna

We continue our stroll through Valencia and encounter the Portal de la Valldigna, an arch that once served as the entrance to the old Moorish quarter. This spot witnessed one of the most significant moments in Valencian history with Father Jofré. Are you ready to discover it?

4. Discover Flavors at the Mercado Central

A few minutes' walk brings us to Valencia’s Mercado Central, a paradise for food lovers. Here, amidst stalls overflowing with fresh fruits, spices, and local delicacies, I recommend you make a stop to enjoy a “montadito” of ham. It’s a culinary experience you cannot miss.

Secret tip: At the end of the market, there’s a bar called Mercat Bar, run by one of the city’s most renowned chefs, Ricard Camarena. It’s worth standing in line to try fresh market products around his unique bar.

5. La Lonja de la Seda: A Gothic Treasure

Right next to the market is the Lonja de la Seda, an impressive Gothic building that will transport you to another era. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the center of the silk trade in the 15th century. Its architecture is a testament to the splendor of that time.

6. A Stroll Through Historic Squares

We continue our journey through the old town, passing through Plaza de la Virgen and Plaza de la Reina. These lively squares are surrounded by cafes and historic buildings, including Valencia’s Cathedral, where the Holy Grail is said to be kept. Further ahead, we find the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the city’s administrative epicenter, with its impressive town hall building and central fountain—a perfect spot to take a short break.

7. Ruzafa: The Hipster Neighborhood

Our next destination is Ruzafa, Valencia’s most modern and vibrant neighborhood. This is where art and culture blend with a bohemian and creative atmosphere. Here, we stop at Bodega Amor Amargo, an old winery from 1915 that has retained its authenticity with original decor and market products. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal and a cozy atmosphere.

8. Relaxing at the Jardín del Turia

After lunch, it’s time to relax. We head to the Jardín del Turia, a vast park that used to be the Turia River's bed and is now the green lung of the city. Here, you can walk, rest under the shade of trees, or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. It’s the ideal place to recharge before continuing our day.

Secret tip: If you love walking amidst greenery, head east towards the beach, where you’ll find the stunning City of Arts and Sciences, a modernist marvel.

9. Sunset at La Albufera

A visit to Valencia wouldn’t be complete without witnessing one of its most beautiful natural spectacles: the sunset at La Albufera. This natural park, home to the largest lake in Spain, is the perfect place to end the day. We board a boat and sail across the calm waters as the sun sets on the horizon, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink. It’s a magical experience that will leave you speechless.

10. Closing with Live Music at Radio City

To top off this perfect day, we return to the city to enjoy Valencia’s vibrant nightlife. I recommend Radio City, an iconic spot where you can listen to live music. Here, among drinks and good music, we close a day that will be hard to forget.

And that would be my perfect day in Valencia. Have you been here before? What would your ideal day look like?

I have many more secrets to share about my hometown... Stay tuned for future posts.
